Synchronicity and the power of coincidenes
A Lecture By Deepak Chopra
1. The world today is in need of Healing. The word ‘healing’ is related to the word ‘holy’.
2. There is a deep rift in the collective soul. Man is not befriending his shadow self. The dark side of the human soul needs to be accepted. Man is today the most dangerous predator alive. A scientist has said that if insects disappear then in 5 years all human beings will disappear, and, if human beings disappear then life will flourish. Man is the only species which kills its own in the name of religion.
3. There are 3 ways to understand 'Reality': a. Through Observation: We understand reality mainly through our senses.
b. Through the Mind: Scientists conduct thought experiments. Quantum theory arose out of thought experiments. The essential nature of material reality is its being ‘non-material’. It consists of just states of energy and vibrations coming out of a void.
c. Through the eyes of the Soul: Our senses are the least reliable in understanding reality. Because, they lie to us. “Our sensory experiences are a premature cognitive commitment to a frozen reality.” All sensory experiences are ‘learnt’. We are conditioned to see reality. Therefore, we need to see reality through the eyes of the soul.
When we use our senses we are following the materialistic way of seeing reality which states that if one can understand how molecules behave then one can understand life. This is the 'Reductionist' way of looking at life and its main protagonists were Newton and Descartes.
On the other hand Heraclitus stated that one can’t step into the same river twice because there is constant change occurring. This is much closer to understanding reality. For instance, when we breathe in we inhale 1023 atoms and when we exhale, we exhale the same number of atoms. This is what, Walt Whitman meant when he said “Every atom that belongs to you belongs to me.” Our bodies are continuously being recycled. 98% of all our atoms are replaced in less than a year. Our DNA is recycled every 6 weeks. So, we outlive the molecules through which we express ourselves. 99.9% of the body is empty space. A void. 'Formlessness' from which we come.
4. At the basic level the universe is a discontinuity. It appears as being continuous. Just like the eye in the cinema theatre sees the film as being continuous. Actually, it is moving at 24 frames per second and therefore is discontinuous. The illusion of continuity is because the eye catches the ‘on’ but not the ‘off’. Our senses are structured for ‘on/off’. Otherwise there is no experience. But, the ‘off’ is so small a space that one does not pay attention to it nor catch it. So, therefore what is in the ‘off’? What is the space between thoughts? It is the transformation vortex or the ground of being. The whole universe is an ‘on/off’ phenomenon. The soul occupies the ‘off’ space. In the presence of one’s soul everything comes and goes. Thoughts come and go. Only the soul remains.
5. There are 5 characteristics of the ‘off’ state or ‘discontinuity’:
a. There is no space, time, object or information. It is non-material. It is a field of pure potentiality.
b. In this field, there is non-local correlation. Everything is instantly correlated with everything else. This is the only way one can explain how all our cells communicate and collaborate within our bodies. Similarly, our bio-rhythms are the symphony of the rhythms of the universe. Non-local correlation which is the finding of Quantum Theory is the mathematical description of ‘Omniscience’. Non-Local correlation is non-mediated and unmitigated. Therefore, it doesn't diminish with distances and space. It even passes the boundaries of time.
c. Quantum Leap. This means, one moves from one point to another without going through any ‘in-between’.
d. Proliferation of uncertainty and chaos. And, therefore more creativity.
e. Observer effect. Universe remains unmanifest if some sentient being is not there.
All the above 5 characteristics describe the ‘soul’. It is non-material. It is omniscient. It is intuitive. It is comfortable with uncertainty. ‘All creativity is quantum. Physical death is the quantum creative act of the soul.’ The soul co-creates with God.
6. Life is like a wheel. Karma, Memory and Desire. Maya is, basically, a symbolic representation of the Absolute. The Archetypal Soul is the source from which the Personal Soul arises.
7. In a Peak experience, there is a glimpse of this discontinuity. It gives one a clue to one’s personal soul. We are, basically, a holographic representation of the Absolute.
8. When your being is in rhythm with that of the universe then synchronicity is experienced. There is a meaningful correspondence. To fulfill an intention which one has, a series of coincidences occur. There is a domain of awareness where we all contain each other. There is something unknown which is doing something and we don’t know what. All that we are left with saying very often is ‘We were in the right place at the right time’ or ‘We were just plain lucky’ or ‘It was grace’ and so on.
9. The 9 characteristics of ‘Synchronicity’ are as follows:
a. It is a true conspiracy of improbabilities.
b. This conspiracy is a result of an causal relationship. A result of ‘Karma’ from the past which they have to complete and therefore the coincidence.
c. Synchronicity happens in the domain of discontinuity. It is orchestrated in the domain of no matter, space, information etc.
d. Glimpsing God’s mind which synchronizes everything. Move into a higher level of consciousness.
e. One needs to have a strong intention.
f. Life starts to transform.
g. Great emotional fulfillment.
h. Start to see the meaning and purpose of one’s incarnation.
i. The inner world and the outer world is one.
One needs to shift from material, to mental to another dimension of consciousness.
10. To achieve ‘synchronicity’, the following 15 commitments need to be made:
a. I will explore the hidden dimensions of my existence.
b. I will see the world in me rather than me in the world. Ultimately, there is a single consciousness. We inter-dependently co-arise. There is no separate self. The body is recycled earth, water and air. You are necessary for me to exist.
c. I will practice the path of Yoga. Some points regarding 'Bhakti' Yoga. Those people whom we love or repel are the mirror of ourselves. The way people behave towards you is a reflection of what is happening within you. Through, communion, compassion and intimacy one achieves true passion. Any relationship which is based on need is doomed to failure. Any relationship based on playfulness is fulfilling. Karma Yoga- Everything comes from God and returns to God.
d. I will never look for fulfillment from outside. All problems have creative solutions.
e. I will understand the true nature of suffering and reach out. All suffering arises out of the wrong way of knowing. Today, there is a crisis of perception.
f. I will find freedom in ‘choice-less awareness’. This is awareness of awareness which makes one detached. Become independent of the opinion of others.
g. Monitor my spiritual growth through looking at the universe as a mirror of what is within me.
h. Understand the nature of evil. Not regard evil as an enemy. One’s shadow self is the part of you that you are embarrassed about. Each one of us is a sinner and a saint. The Shadow Self is secret, hides in darkness, is dangerous if suppressed, is primitive, shrouded in myth. When certain conditions are present then the shadow self surfaces. For instance, when one is suppressed or isolated or has an attitude of us vs. them and so on. One needs to face one’s own shadow self. In the absence of opposing forces one can’t create.
i. Understand the multi-dimensional nature of consciousness. There are various states of consciousness. Ultimately, one experiences seeing the whole universe in one’s own self. In this world but not of the world. God becomes impossible to avoid.
j. I will see death as an opportunity for life. At every level of creation life and death move together. At every moment one is dying and recreating. Cancer cells have forgotten to die.
k. The only time I have is Now. “Life-centered present moment of awareness”.
l. I will allow the universe to think through me.
m. I will be truly free when I am not a person. If I see myself as a person then I will see others as persons. If I see God in me then I will see God in others.
n. Pay attention to coincidences.
o. I will never stop asking questions. The Universe is waiting for questions to be asked. How one asks the question determines the behavior of the universe. “Look up because the stars want to see themselves.” The universe needs me to see itself.
11. Addiction is the no.1 disease of civilization. All people who are addicts are spiritual people because they are all looking for an experience of ecstasy. But, ecstasy consists of physical ecstasy, mythical ecstasy which is our yearning for something which is in the collective consciousness. This is what explains the various myths which give rise to symbolic representations of beings (gods). Lastly, there is 'Sacred' ecstasy which is the direct experience of God. All 3 are needed to experience ecstasy
